夢は夢如く/如梦之梦

物語は、2000年の台北の病室で、死にゆく第五の患者から始まります。彼は奇妙な病気にかかっており、熱が止まらず、死の直前です。運命から逃れられないこの精神と体力の「消耗」の感覚は、彼を台北からパリ、そして上海へと旅に駆り立てます。物語はこうして展開され、第五の患者は驚くべきことに、自分が1930年代の上海の売春婦である顧香蘭と密接に関係していることに気づきます。第五の患者、顧香蘭、伯爵、江紅...これらの人々の命は交錯し、真実と幻想のように、話が続きます。

The story begins with a dying fifth patient in a hospital room in Taipei in the year 2000. He is suffering from a strange illness, his fever won't stop and he is on the verge of death. This sense of mental and physical 'exhaustion', of not being able to escape his fate, drives him to travel from Taipei to Paris and then to Shanghai. As the story develops, the fifth patient surprisingly realises that he is closely related to Gu Xianglan, a prostitute in Shanghai in the 1930s. The fifth patient, Gu Xianglan, the Count, Jiang Hong... The lives of these people intersect and the story continues as truth and illusion.
